Take a scenic drive through North Carolina this autumn to soak in the state’s natural beauty. 5. Cove Creek Falls
After exploring Moore Cove Falls, take a short drive down Route 276 to the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and Fish Hatchery. Just a few miles beyond the hatchery, you will find the entrance to the Cove Creek Group Campground. From there, take a nice, easy hike straight through the campground to Cove Creek Falls, or enjoy a moderate five mile hike via Caney Bottom Trail. Either way, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the forest and some of the prettiest falls in the area.
6. Sliding Rock
Just past Cove Creek Falls on Route 276, you’ll find Sliding Rock. This 60-foot natural rock slide makes for a fun way to get your feet wet and work up an adrenaline rush. Additionally, there is a small pool at the base of the slide, making it the perfect spot to cool off during the heat of summer. While you can still slide during the off-season, the water is incredibly cold!
7. Dry Falls
Next, give yourself time to dry out with a drive to Dry Falls in Highlands, NC. Dry Falls is one of the most beautiful and easy-to-access waterfalls in the state. The trailhead begins just off of US 64. Visitors will enjoy an easy 1/4-mile stroll down to the viewing deck. For those who want a closer look, a paved trail leads straight behind the falls to a small cave.
8. Upper Whitewater Falls
Your trip concludes at the stunningly beautiful Whitewater Falls – the highest waterfall east of the Rockies! Simply pull off of Hwy 281 into the parking area, and take a short walk up the 1/4-mile trail to the viewing deck. For a closer look, visitors can descend a flight of stairs to the lower platform.
